Do you want to start your own blog?

If so you know there is a lot of preparation involved before you’re finally ready to launch your blog for real! It can easily feel overwhelming at first.

One of the main questions I see over and over is:

How many blog posts do I need before starting my blog?”

Great question!

In this post, I will share with you how many articles I think you should have before you launch your blog. And more importantly, I will share the reasoning behind it as well, which is ultimately more valuable!

But before we dive into it:

Back to the question at hand.

The Ongoing Debate

You could try it for yourself:

Ask “how many posts should I have before launching my blog?” in any of the active blogging groups and you’ll get a variety of answers.

How do I know?

Because I’m in them and I have seen people ask the question multiple times. With the same kind of answers every time.

There are 2 main schools of thought:

  1. Launch with 1 article ready and write more as you go.
  2. Start with x articles. The amount varies, but generally, it’s between 5 and 10.

The vast majority is going for launching with a single article.

But, is that really the best idea?

Well no, I strongly disagree with the view!

The idea is to just get started and to stop people from procrastinating. For some people, it might work to put pressure on themselves by starting early now “having” to continue writing.

It’s a valid point.

But there are 2 major issues I see with it.

Why You Should NOT Start a Blog With Just 1 Article!

Imagine this scenario:

You’re on Facebook and see a link to an article that looks interesting. So you click on it. The site looks good, so you start reading the article.

And it’s great!

It keeps your attention the entire time, you learn a lot from it, and feel good reading it. Maybe you even share the blog post. Then you decide you want to read more, so you click the home button. And….

Nothing!

That’s it. You just read everything this new blog has published. Just that single article…

Bit of a letdown, isn’t it?

Remember that you only have 1 chance to make a good impression on a new reader. If they only see 1 article they may not be coming back to your blog again. You want more content there to wow them!

That’s reason 1 to start with multiple articles.

I find the other argument for starting with 1 article pretty funny:

The idea of launching 1 blog post is that nobody will see it anyway unless you promote your content. So you might as well get it out there faster. They’re technically correct, but the argument itself makes no sense at all to me.

Why work hard on your content if people don’t read it?

This is the exact reason why you should start with more blog posts! When you have more blog posts, you have more things you can promote and get traffic to! Getting readers should be the goal, for which you need things people want to read.

You can learn more about driving traffic here.

For this article itself though, the rule of thumb is you should spend at least as much time promoting your content as you do writing it. Content that doesn’t get read won’t help anyone, including you.

So How Many Blog Posts Do You Need Before You Launch?

While there is no concrete answer, I would recommend starting with a handful of articles.

This gives new readers additional content, so your blog doesn’t look like a ghost town. You also have content that you can share in relevant communities, as well as your own social media.

Somewhere around 4-7 would be the sweet spot in my opinion.

Just avoid falling into the trap of seeing blogs that have hundreds of posts, and thinking you need lots of articles to get started! It will cause you to procrastinate on launching and seeing the results of your blog.

Start with a couple and add more as you go on.

Conclusion

There you have it.

While not a specific number, you should now have a clear understanding of why it’s beneficial to have a few blog posts written before you actually launch your blog.

Hope that helps you out in your blogging adventure!
